The Neutral: Graduate Journal of Cinema and Media Studies is a peer-reviewed graduate student led journal run out of the Cinema Studies Institute at the University of Toronto. Founded in 2018, the journal takes its title from Roland Barthes's concept - the neutral - which names a style of thinking that is not burdened or limited by binary oppositions. Far from a centrist comittment to ideological neutrality, the neutral as both a concept and as the guiding value of this journal represents a posture, disposition, or temperment that is receptive to the new. With this ethic in mind, we welcome submissions related to the study of moving image and other emergent media that engage theory and/or philosophy and/or history equally. </image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://constellatedmedia.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/cat_handbill_colour_final-layers-large.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>Canadian Animation Treasures Handbill</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://constellatedmedia.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/ny-bedrockin_-eve_poster_final-large.jpeg</image:loc><image:title>NY Bedrockin Eve Livestream Poster</image:title></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://constellatedmedia.ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/devildanielposter.jpg</image:loc><image:title>Pop-Up Cinemateque Season 3: The Devil and Daniel Mouse</image:title><image:caption>Don't miss our first screening of a Halloween special from famed Canadian animation studio Nelvana, THE DEVIL AND DANIEL MOUSE (1978) on 35mm by Clive A.
